Study of the Effect of Wind Velocity and Light on the Rate of Transpiration in Excised Twig/Leaf
▸ EXPERIMENT NO. 3
Bsc 5th Semester
Aim of the Experiment
To study the effect of wind velocity and light on the rate of transpiration in excised twig/leaf.
Requirements
Conical flask, liquid paraffin, thread, digital balance, graph paper, leaves of China rose (Hibiscus rosa-sinesis) with stalk.
Theory
Transpiration is a physiological process where water is lost from the aerial parts of the plant in the form of water vapour. It may occur through stomata, cuticle or lenticel out. I which stomatal transpiration accounts to about 90-95% of the total transpiration. The rate of transpiration is the amount of water lost per unit area per unit time (mg per sq. cm. per hour). The rate of transpiration varies under different environmental conditions like wind velocity, light, shade or darkness (night) etc.
FIG. 3.1: Measurement of a sample leaf area (in cm²) of China rose. In the margin, the area which covers more than 50% of 1 cm² box is to be counted as 1 cm2 and less than 50% Fresh, uninjured, health mature leaves of China is discarded. From the graph, the rose are taken by cutting carefully and obliquely area of the leaf is found to be 61 cm²
Procedure
below the stalk of the leaf near the nodal region and immediately kept one each in conical flask with water in such a way that around 4-5 cm of the stalk of the leaf is dipped in water. Then few drops of liquid paraffn is poured over the water surface to check evaporation of water from the surface.
